Cameron Day Chair Creates Trust to Endow Faculty Development

Cameron Day Chair Creates Trust to Endow Faculty Development
to Endow Faculty Development

Dr. Mike Amspoker, Cameron Day Chair and Biology Professor at Westminster, clearly knows and understands the partnership between faculty and students in the education process. Becoming the Cameron Day Chair in 2005 has given him the time and resources to strengthen his own as well as other faculty members' professional goals and help students with their educational advancement. He is able to satisfy his own intellectual curiosity by focusing on the research with organisms and diatoms that has been his passion all his professional life. He promotes the professional career development of other faculty members, and he does everything possible to help all students achieve their goals and ambitions, whether that is medical, law, or dental school or some other graduate programs.

"I am so grateful for the opportunities I have received at Westminster," says Amspoker. "They make me a better teacher and keep my intellectual curiosity alive and well."

After receiving his Ph.D. in 1977, Dr. Amspoker had some problems finding a job. However, by 1986, he had reached the point where he had several opportunities for positions, including Westminster. In retrospect, Amspoker says he had no idea a small college could be so effective and treat faculty and students so well. Westminster has been a good fit for Mike Amspoker.

"This college and this community have treated me so well that I feel the responsibility to give something back," says Dr. Amspoker.

Therefore, when Dr. Amspoker made his estate planning, he took care of his Westminster family as well as his own family. In his trust, he intends to continue his partnership with Westminster College by creating the Faculty Development Endowment Fund. Through his endowment fund, Dr. Amspoker will make it possible for faculty members that follow him to enjoy the same opportunities he has enjoyed to conduct research, stimulate their intellect, and become better teachers and mentors.

"It is a good feeling to do something so worthwhile for someone else," says Dr. Amspoker.
